What is FIRST Tech Challenge?
It’s way more than building robots. FIRST Tech Challenge teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format.
Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team.
The robot kit is reusable from year to year and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. Teams design and build robots, raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach to earn specific awards. Participants are eligible to apply for $80M+ in college scholarships.

Student Grade LevelThe FTC program is primarily for students grades 7 - 12. However, there are some exceptions made for younger students with a high level of robotics experience.
Build / Competition ScheduleThe season starts during the first semester of the school year with the initial kick-off event occurring on the September. Teams are responsible for the designing, building and testing of their robot. Teams compete in a league play tournament which consists of three qualifiers and one final event. Teams that have qualified for the world championships will compete at this event which is held in Houston, TX in late April of the same year.

Requirements for Joining the TeamPassion for STEM, a risk-taker and a team-worker are the three main qualifications for becoming a team member. We can teach students robots but we cannot teach them passion. If you have a passion for STEM we have a place for you on the team.
Cost for ParticipationThere is a fee associated with participating on the FTC team. Other costs involved include team uniforms and cost associated with travel. Throughout the season the students may be required to participate in events to help raise funds for the team in order to defer expenses.
